Baby Belling 121R mini oven expand

GHI Rating

Price

£249

Features

Electric oven and grill, two solid top hotplates. Drop-down door. One oven shelf and a grill pan. External dimensions H42cm x W48cm x D43cm

Comments

Good points: Accurate thermostat/oven temperatures. Roast potatoes were brown and crispy and roast chicken was well cooked and golden brown. Fruit cake was a little dark on the bottom, but otherwise very good.

Drawbacks: Fairy cakes and vol-au-vents were burnt on the base. It was a squeeze getting the chicken and roast potatoes in on one shelf. When using the grill or oven, only the left hand hotplate will work. Its height means that it is not easy to reach the hotplates when the oven is placed on a normal height worktop. Only one shelf, which can be limiting. Oven temps marked in 50oC intervals so it is difficult to be exact when setting temperatures. No hob-hot light. No grill pan handle. Door has no window in it, so you can't see inside when door is closed. No internal light. Oven door gets hot.

Good points: Best grill of all the ovens tested. Vol-au-vents and fairy cakes were good, as was the roast chicken.

Drawbacks: Roast potatoes were pale and not very crisp. It was a squeeze getting the chicken and roast potatoes in on one shelf. Door feels clunky to open/close. Oven temps marked in 20oC - 30oC intervals. Not easy to see into oven with the door closed. No grill pan handle. No hob-hot warning light. Only one shelf, which can be limiting. Oven door gets hot.

Good points: Very good fairy cakes, roast chicken and roast potatoes.

Drawbacks: Vol-au-vents slightly dark on top and fruit cake burnt on top. Internal light stays on unless you switch off at the socket. Fan is noisy when cooking. Oven door gets hot. Oven temps marked in 50oC intervals so it is difficult to be exact when setting temperatures. No hob-hot light. Grill pan handle doesn't feel very secure. Not very easy to see into oven when the door is closed as the door front is mirrored. No internal light. Grill is slow.

Price

£90

Features

On/ off switch. No temperature controls. Pan is dishwasher safe.

Comments

Good points: Despite having a simple on/off switch and no temperature controls, it produced crisp and evenly browned jacket potatoes and properly cooked fairy cakes, fish fingers and roast chicken. Puff pastry parcels rose and browned well and had surprisingly crisp bases, considering the heat comes from the lid. Beef stew was successful, although the meat was a little tough.

Drawbacks: Oven chips were unevenly cooked.
