Take a walk: the waterways of Inverness
A circular walk along the River Ness and Caledonian Canal
Distance: 8 miles
Time: allow yourself: 3 hours
Route: Inverness is an island and this walk takes you along the two beautiful but contrasting water arteries that enclose the heart-shaped city.
Start at the Tourist Information Centre, and follow the Great Glen Way along the east bank of the River Ness. Pretty lattice bridges take you through parkland and across the river to reach the Caledonian Canal among the trees of Whin Island.
Turn north along the east bank of the canal, a broad waterway flanked with yellow broom. Cross the first bridge (Tomnahurich Bridge) and continue up the west bank. At Clachnaharry Sea Lock, theres a superb view across the Firth of Beauly.
Bear right around the peninsula of South Kessock to reach the viewpoint at Carnac Point the Kessock road bridge across the neck of the Moray Firth before turning back along the River Ness into the city.
