Make a map lampshade

make map lampshade

You will need
• 1 road map (vintage is best)
• 1 sheet 350g cartridge paper (from your local art shop)
• SprayMount or similar spray adhesive
• Ruler
• Scissors
• Lampshade frame, either an old one, stripped, or a kit (try www.needcraft.co.uk)
• Edging ribbon, £3 per metre, Flint
• Fireproofing spray, £29.99, Fred Aldous

What you do

1. Attach the map to the cartridge paper with adhesive spray, taking care to smooth out any creases. Measure the circumference of the lampshade rings and add an extra 3cm (for glueing the two ends). This is the length of your sheet. Decide on the depth of the shade and mark this rectangular shape onto the map.

2. Cut out the piece.

3. Carefully overlap one end of the rectangle over the other, and glue. Make sure you don’t exceed the 3cm allowance. Place one lampshade ring just under the rim of the shade.

4. Apply glue to the ribbon and press half of it lengthways around the circumference of the shade. Fold the other half over the rim of the shade and the ring, cutting notches to make it easier to fold. Hold until secure. Repeat this process with the other ring. Spray with fireproofing spray, then attach the shade to your chosen lamp base.
