Just wonder if anyone knows of an alternative to using suet in mincemeat? They cannot find it in Finland and my daughter-in-law wants to make her own mincemeat. Would grated lard do instead and if so, would you need less lard than the equivalent suet? Would be really grateful to find this out.

A good alternative is Atora Vegetable fat. As for lard it contains as much fat w/weight as suet. Atora is refined, in pellet form in either suet (animal) or vegetable (plants). You could Google 'vegetarian alternatives to suet' and see.

Hi Petunia,

We live in Norway and you can get Robertson's mincemeat in a jar in some of the specialist supermarkets but it's pretty expensive. We couldn't find it anywhere last weekend, so maybe the Norwegians were panic buying!

Isn't beef suet just beef fat coated in flour? If so , she could pass beef dripping through a mincer and then toss it in flour and sieve it to remove the surplus flour. Alternatively, are there any "proper" butchers nearby who could make it for her?

When I lived abroad, I just had someone send me a couple packets of Atora in the post. Is there a reason why you can't post some to her? Check with customs, it should be fine to mail it.

Did you find a supplere In Norway? I Would like to find one In Bergen, Stord or Haugesund area or through the net! I make lots of mincepies for markets and alternatives melt too easily and while they taste good it spoils the appearance.
