Go on a course: candle making

Country Living online 21.01.2009

If you keep your own bees and want to know how to put your beeswax to good use, or simply love creating things, try the satisfying craft of candle-making. By Amanda King

scraping beeswax from honeycombThe one-day course run by Blackhorse Apiaries in Guildford covers both ‘hot' and ‘cold' candle-making. We spent the morning learning how to ‘roll' candles - the simpler method - using only the stickiness of the beeswax and the warmth of our fingers. Then it was time to head into the ‘hot room' and try our hand at making moulded candles. This involved clamping the wick in the centre of a mould and then pouring the hot wax inside. I finished the day with a handful of homemade candles and the knowledge to help me light up a dark wintry afternoon at home.

Blackhorse Apiaries (01483 475259; www.blackhorseapiaries.org.uk) candle-making course costs £30 including lunch and is held every October.
