An intricate sprawling sandcastle

School them in sandcastles

Weymouth, Dorset
Weymouth's status as a seaside resort was established more than 200 years ago when King George III visited. Today, thoughts are turning to the future as the resort will host the Olympic sailing events in 2012. Were sandcastle construction an Olympic event, Weymouth would again make an ideal venue. The fine sand on the beach is said to be some of the best in the UK for making them. The beach even has a resident sand sculptor - Mark Anderson. He learned the art from his grandfather, Fred Darrington, who began making striking sculptures from Weymouth sand in the 1920s (01305 785747, www.visitweymouth.co.uk).
