Teach them to surf

Polzeath, Cornwall

There's no shortage of places along the Devon and Cornwall coast where kids can dip their toes into the world of surfing. However, Polzeath on Cornwall's north coast gets the thumbs up for offering a gently shelving beach, lifeguards, learner-friendly waves and a family atmosphere. TJ's Surf Shop (01208 863625), located behind the beach, arranges equipment hire from £23 per day, and Surf's Up Surf School offers lessons. Kids aged seven and under can even join the Intro to Surfing course to see
how they get on - one hour, £14; two hours, £20 (01208 862003, www.surfsupsurfschool.com).
