We asked for photographs that captured the spirit and atmosphere of the British coast during each season, and had expected that summer would be the most popular category. However, this proved not to be the case: the subtleties of spring and autumn and the drama of winter captured your imagination equally.
The day of judging saw Coast's editor Clare Gogerty, art director Joe McIntyre, editorial operations manager Niki Wood and photographer Jason Ingrams join our sponsors from Corbis, represented by director of photography Vanessa Kramer, account manager Penny Mosgrove and photographer David Spurdens. They spent hours poring over the images, until a shortlist was drawn up. Some photographs inevitably polarised opinion, others drew a unanimously positive response. Each photograph in the shortlist was voted on with a show of hands until the four winners had been selected.
Picking the winner
All that remained was the most difficult task of all: deciding on the overall winner. Every judge had his or her favourite but it was agreed that the fresh, vital energy and harmonious composition of Nigel Robinson's image of two romping dogs on a Scottish island captured the spirit of summer beautifully and won him the ultimate prize.
Nigel wins a trip with aerial photographer (and one of the judges) David Spurdens, flying along the coast from Brighton, taking pictures as he goes. We'll let you know how he gets on. And, as you travel around the coast this year, remember to take your camera with you. The results could be featured on these pages in 12 months' time when the winners of the next competition will be announced...
