The ultimate coastal walks: the Barmouth Bridge caper

Fairbourne to Barmouth, West Wales: A most unusual walk, this one starts alongside the chuffing miniature steam locomotives of the Fairbourne Railway, then heads across a wonderful Victorian viaduct high above the Mawddach Estuary with modern trains flashing by that make the structure tremble. The route: From Fairbourne railway station, follow the Fairbourne Railway, then bear right along the marshes to Morfa Mawddach station. Cross Barmouth Bridge to reach Barmouth.
Don’t miss: Breathtaking estuary views in peaceful surroundings, and crossing Barmouth Bridge as trains rumble by.
Stamina required? Easy, level walking. Vertigo sufferers could have a problem on Barmouth Bridge, though.
How long will it take? Two hours for the four miles.
Refuelling options: Visit the Last Inn, Barmouth (01341 280530), a nice old pub with great food on the harbour.
Getting there: Rail to Fairbourne; A493 to Fairbourne. Return by rail from Barmouth.
