The ultimate coastal walks: cliff path and Cuillins

All About You online 17.03.2008

Are you looking for a jaw-dropping, spine-tingling coastal walk? Or a gentle saunter along a golden beach? Look no further! We’ve found the best, from vertiginous clifftops to a desert of sand, all around the UK... By Christopher Somerville

Coastal path and hills on the Isle of SkyeCamasunary Bay and the Cuillin Hills, Isle of Skye: This exciting low-level walk features a breathtaking scramble along a narrow, vertiginous hillside track, looking forward into the perfect curve of Camasunary Bay. Up in the sky behind the beach hang the dark, jagged Cuillin Hills, a memorable backdrop 3,000 feet high.

The route: From Elgol, ascend the cliff path north to Camasunary Bay, then take the hill track east to the B8083 and the road to Elgol.

Don’t miss: Stunning views of Camasunary Bay and the Cuillins, and the nerve-tingling scramble along the narrow path.

Stamina required? The Elgol-Camasunary stretch is along a very narrow hillside track above steep drops, so there is a possibility of vertigo. And it’s a rough hill track from Camasunary to the B8083. Stout walking boots recommended.

How long will it take? Four to five hours to do nine miles.

Refuelling options: Cuillin View Coffee Shop, Elgol (01471 866223), does what it says on the tin: great coffee, fantastic mountain views.

Getting there: Rail to Kyle of Lochalsh, then bus 51 to Broadford, 49 to Elgol; A87 via Skye Bridge to Broadford, then the B8083 to Elgol.

Sleeping: The Hotel Eilean Iarmain, Sleat, Isle of Skye (01471 833332, www.eileaniarmain.co.uk), has a very traditional, welcoming atmosphere, right beside the sea. From £75 single, £100 double B&B.

Maps: OS maps Landranger 32; Explorer 411. Click here for the Ordnance Survey Get-a-map.
