The ultimate coastal walks: cliffs of the Jurassic Coast
Are you looking for a jaw-dropping, spine-tingling coastal walk? Or a gentle saunter along a golden beach? Look no further! We’ve found the best, from vertiginous clifftops to a desert of sand, all around the UK... By Christopher Somerville
Swanage and Worth Matravers, Dorset: Start by steam train from Corfe to Swanage, then take the coast path round Durlston Head and the much-quarried, fossil-rich cliffs of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Swim among sea anemones in the tidal pool at Dancing Ledge, before heading inland to the odd and delightful Square & Compass pub at Worth Matravers, and on across fields to Corfe Castle’s towering ruin.
The route: Travel from Corfe to Swanage by bus 142, 143 or Swanage Railway (www.swanagerailway.co.uk). From the railway station, walk the Coast Path via Durlston Country Park, Tilly Whim Caves, Dancing Ledge, Seacombe Cliff and inland to Worth Matravers; then via St Alban’s Head, Chapman’s Pool and Hill Bottom. The Purbeck Way leads you inland to Corfe Castle.
Don’t miss: Swanage Railway’s steam trains; the spectacular Jurassic Coast cliffs and the Dancing Ledge tidal swimming pool, hand-carved by quarrymen.
Stamina required? No difficulties (South West Coast Path National Trail and field paths) but pace yourself – it’s a long walk.
How long will it take? Allow a whole leisurely day to do the 14 miles.
Refuelling options: The Square & Compass, Worth Matravers (01929 439229), is a highly characterful stonecutters’ pub with cosy snugs and its own quirky museum.
Getting there: Rail to Wareham, then the bus 142 or 143 to Corfe; A351 to Corfe.
Sleeping: For a peaceful haven tucked away in the trees, stay at Lower Lynch House, Corfe Castle (01929 480089, www.sawdays.co.uk). From £60 double B&B.
