Somewhere to stay: Root Farmhouse, Clitheroe
A royally connected B&B in Lancashire
Not many B&Bs are owned by the Queen but Root Farmhouse is part of the Crown's Whitewell Estate around Dunsop Bridge, officially the geographic centre of Britain. This is a place where you can get away from it all, walking the Bowland fells or enjoying the solitude. There's only one B&B room but John (the former gamekeeper) and Rebecca Clarke have big plans for more in the outbuildings. Like all good hosts, they know when to appear and when to leave you alone. Prices start at £80 per person, per night.
