Somewhere to stay: The Inn at Whitewell, Whitewell
An ancient hostelry in rural Lancashire
Set amid the wild beauty of north Lancashire, next to the church overlooking the River Hodder, this magnificent inn is far from the bustle of town life. The atmosphere is unique, thanks to Charles Bowman and his staff, who imbue this ancient hostelry with personality. Inside, it's relaxed with a haphazard arrangement of bric-a-brac, log fires, heavy beams and colourful rugs in the stone-floored taproom, rambling dining areas and library. The bar might offer pork medallions with mustard sauce, or salads and substantial sandwiches at lunchtime. Evening dining majors on quality local ingredients, perhaps breast of Goosnargh duck with tomato and bean cassoulet, fantastic puddings and cheeses. Bedrooms have antique furniture, real fires and Victorian baths. Eight miles of fishing, a superlative wine list (and wine merchant), an art gallery and a shop selling homemade foods complete the picture.
