Plant a tree and support the rural economy
Put your pound into the rural enconomy and support Country Living's charity of the year
Country Living's silver jubilee charity of the year is the Woodland Trust, which has an important job to do in the countryside, planting more native trees and creating woodlands. For, as nature struggles to cope with climate change, the UK needs native trees like never before.
Anyone who owns or has access to land, whether a garden, community area, smallholding, farm or large estate can help. And it's got real benefits for the local community and rural economy.
Local tree nurseries can supply native tree saplings, stakes and protection (and wildlife friendly plants for the garden). And in time they contribute handsomely to their environment by soaking up carbon and, providing shade, shelter and habitat for wildlife and natural pollinators, supporting fruit production and a wide range of crops. Within as little as seven years, trees can also deliver sustainable local wood fuel supplies.

Even a visit to one of the Woodland Trust's 1,000-plus woods, whether to see seasonal delights such as bluebells and autumn colour, or just to refresh the lungs, can help the local economy. One pub in North Yorkshire reported a 25% increase in takings from the crowds drawn to Hackfall's wonderfully vivid autumn spectacle - so look for the wood and look for the pub!
