Best regional pigs: British Hampshire
Regional breeds were developed to suit the conditions of their local area, helping them to survive in times of hardship.
Although developed in the USA, the original British Hampshire breeding stock was imported from a Hampshire farm in 1832, and was known as ‘the thin rind' breed due to its lean meat.
Today's British Hampshire is a handsome pig, with a black body and white belt across its shoulders. Prick-eared, it is more alert than its lop-eared counterparts.
It is intelligent, but can be headstrong and will sometimes do odd things, such as trying to eat your wellies.
