Take to the saddle
If the sound of hoofbeats on the sand appeals to you, why not go horse-riding by the sea?
Little can beat the exhilaration of galloping along a deserted, wintry shoreline, then taking your horse into the sea to cool down. This time of year is perfect for beach riding, as the soft sand provides a welcome alternative to the hard ground elsewhere, and many of the beaches that close to riders over summer are now reopening. So, if the only thing holding you back from galloping along a stretch of open beach is your lack of confidence in the saddle, now is the time to get on a horse and learn how to ride.
A number of trekking centres are based by the sea - type in your postcode at www.nationalridingfestival.co.uk to find an approved one near you. Or for a beach pony-trekking centre that offers bed and breakfast, as well as lessons, try Parc-Le-Breos Riding and Holiday Centre in Gower, South Wales (01792 371636, www.parc-le-breos.co.uk).
