Stuck at the airport? These are your rights...
Flight delays can cause a lot of stress and heartache so make sure you know what you are entitled to should it happen to you.
As a general rule, you're entitled to two free phone calls/emails, plus refreshments/meals after a set time, depending on the distance you're travelling and the length of time you're delayed. This breaks down as:
A two-hour delay for trips up to 1,500km
A three-hour delay for trips of 1,500-3,500km
A four-hour delay for trips over 3,500km.
You are also entitled to hotel accommodation if the delay is overnight.
If your flight is delayed by more than five hours, you can request a ticket refund if you decide not to travel. This does mean you won't be entitled to other help, such as hotel or travel costs.
If your flight is delayed by more that three hours, you may also be able to claim compensation, unless the airline can prove the delay was caused by unavoidable, extraordinary circumstances (such as a hurricane or terrorist attack). The amount varies between 250 and 600.
Complain to your airline or, if you booked a package holiday, your tour operator. If you're still unhappy, contact the Civil Aviation Authority (0207 240 6061), or Consumer Direct.
