Somewhere to stay: Capital Hotel, Knightsbridge

A traditional townhouse in London

doorman at Capital Hotel London

It makes a refreshing change to find a townhouse hotel where the interiors aren't all pale taupe, where there are no flat-screen televisions, the style is maximist rather than minimalist, the staff aren't clad in Armani and the curtains open by hand instead of remote control. The Capital Hotel, on London's Basil Street, is just a two-minute stroll from Harrods and Harvey Nics. It's still very traditional and includes award-winning Jérôme Ponchelle's French restaurant. Family owned and run, The Capital has just 49 rooms and feels like a miniature grand.
