What's on: This Christmas, the celebration Yuletide York in the mediaeval city offers a choice of markets and events. First the St Nicholas Fayre (Nov 26-29) specialises in gifts, crafts and the best in local farm produce. York's grand Guild Hall provides a home for Made in Yorkshire artists and crafters from across the region. Carol singers, buskers and costumed traders add to the atmosphere. The Early Music Christmas Festival (Dec 2-8). This popular festival of Christmas entertainment includes performances by carnival bands and orchestral ensembles
