Five nuggets of expert advice to help you get into your stride...

Fit first
Always invest in footwear that fits correctly. To avoid blisters and shin splints, there should be a half-inch gap between the ends of your toes and the end of your shoes.
Perfect pair
Select the right pair of shoes for the type of walking you will be doing. Trekking on mountain terrain requires different footwear from road walking, for example.
No wellies!
Unless you plan to scramble through streams for long periods of time, avoid donning a pair of wellies - they are prone to chafing and won't keep your feet warm.
Stock up on socks
In colder conditions, wear thick, comfortable socks or two pairs of thinner ones to provide protection.
Stay comfy
For extra cushioning on the heels and soles of your feet, try using insoles.
