The ultimate coastal walks: Scotland's wild northwest

Birds eye view of the coast of Cape Wrath in Scotland

Cape Wrath, northwest Scotland: One of the loneliest coast walks in Britain starts with the droll commentary of David the minibus driver as he takes you up the rough track to Cape Wrath Lighthouse. The solitary walk along plunging cliffs to ford the Kearvaig River and reach the empty sands of Kearvaig Bay is an experience in a million.

The route: From Cape Wrath Lighthouse, trek east along cliffs (no visible path) for three miles; ford the river to reach the house in Kearvaig Bay, then follow the track to the road. Wait here for the minibus or follow the road back to the lighthouse.

Don’t miss: Looking out for seabirds and orchids on the Cape Wrath cliffs, and the bleak, dramatic scenery. Then there’s lonely, pristine Kearvaig Bay with its guardian rock stacks.

Stamina required? There are peat hags and rough moorland, plus Kearvaig River must be forded. You’ll need to take proper hill-walking gear and appropriate footwear.

How long will it take? Allow two-and-a-half hours to do the four-and-a-half miles from the lighthouse to the road via Kearvaig, and four hours for the eight-and-a-half mile circular route.

Refuelling options: None at present (take a picnic); a tearoom is to open ‘soon’ at Cape Wrath Lighthouse.

Getting there: Rail to Lairg, then postbus to Durness; A838 to Durness. Ferry/minibus service to Cape Wrath Lighthouse (01971 511343/287; www.capewrath.org.uk).

Sleeping: Morven B&B, Durness (01971 511252). Morag MacKenzie couldn’t be more friendly and welcoming. £20 single, £40 double B&B.
