Walk this way: King's Lynn to Sutton Bridge
Weekend walks by the sea, with seabirds and solitude, in East Anglia. By Christopher Somerville
Seabirds, huge skies and solitude are the highlights of this walk, which is on the margins of the great Wash Estuary. There's also a chance to explore the salty old port of King's Lynn during your weekend stopover in a stylish boutique hotel in town.
Route: Take the ferry to West Lynn, then follow the Peter Scott Walk round the sea wall to the lighthouse (where Scott lived in the 1930s). From here, follow the east bank of the River Nene and cross to Sutton Bridge. Catch the Norfolk Green bus 505 back to King's Lynn.
Look out for: The view of King's Lynn from the West Lynn ferry, plus the huge skies and wild birds that swoop over The Wash.
Where to stay: The former Gurney's Bank, set on the historic Quayside in King's Lynn - a stone's throw from the start of the walk - is now the stylish, welcoming and upmarket Bank House Hotel (left, 01553 660492, www.thebankhouse.co.uk), with double B&B from £50 per person. Eating here won't break the bank - £15-£20 pays for superb, locally sourced fish and meat, or game from Thornham Estate, and a starter, too. The hotel is perfectly placed for exploring and offers pre- and post-theatre meals on request.
Treat yourself: Buy a tub of locally caught brown shrimps at King's Lynn's Saturday Market - you won't get a nicer picnic this side of heaven.
How long? It should take around five to six hours: a long but easy-going walk.
Difficulty: 1/3
Duration: 13 miles
How to get there: There are buses and trains to King's Lynn (including direct London services). By road, take the A10, A17 or A47.
