Walk this way: Whitby to High Hawsker
Weekend walks by the sea: for vampires and venerable inns, in North Yorkshire. By Christopher Somerville
Follow the Dracula Trail through Whitby, then walk out along cliffs where jet was once mined. Enjoy Whitby's Captain Cook Museum and spoil yourself with some jet jewellery from the town's workshops.
Route: If you're staying at the White Horse & Griffin, to start the walk you simply stroll out of the inn door. From Whitby Abbey, follow the Cleveland Way along the cliffs for three miles to Gnipe Howe, passing Saltwick Bay en route. Go inland to High Hawsker, then take the old railway footpath back to Whitby.
Look out for: Settings from Dracula (the 199 steps, St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey); views from the cliffs; the old railway footpath; Larpool Viaduct.
Where to stay: The venerable inn on Whitby's Church Street, the White Horse & Griffin (01947 604857/ 825026, www.whitehorseandgriffin.co.uk), is wonderfully welcoming, with a laid-back style that enchants its many aficionados. Single B&B is from £50, double from £65 per person; the famed traditional Sunday lunch at £12.95 is a button-busting delight. Friendly and funny, the staff will point you towards museums, jet workshops, kipper smokeries and the delights of Whitby.
Treat yourself: Buy a beautiful, heavy, clinking, black string of jet beads from the Whitby Jet Heritage Centre on Church Street (01947 821530, www.whitbyjet.net). And don't miss out on afternoon tea at Botham's on Skinner Street (www.botham.co.uk).
How long? A moderately challenging trek: allow four hours.
Difficulty: 2/3
Duration: eight miles
How to get there: Take the train or bus to Whitby. By road, take the A1, A66 and A171.
