Walk this way: Zennor to St Ives
Weekend walks by the sea: for coastal heaths and modern art. By Christopher Somerville
Base your weekend in the intriguing hamlet of Zennor - from here, you can enjoy the most savagely beautiful section of the Cornish coast on the South West Coast Path. Nose around arty St Ives en route, then walk back through fields to a cosy pub B&B
Route: From The Tinners Arms in Zennor, take the South West Coast Path to St Ives, which lands you on Porthmeor Beach, home to Tate St Ives. To return, leave town by Higher Stennack and take the field path to Zennor via Venton Vision Farm, Trevalgan and Boscubben.
Look out for: The kooky Wayside Museum and the carved bench-end mermaid in the church at Zennor; along the cliffs, vibrant coastal heath, seals and stunning views.
Where to stay: The cosiest pub-with-rooms for miles around is right on this walk. The Tinners Arms at Zennor (01736 796927, www.tinnersarms.com) has recently opened a stylish, light-filled B&B wing, the White House, alongside the pub. Bed and breakfast is from £55 single, £47.50 double. A two-course dinner in front of the log fire in The Tinners Arms, featuring fabulous locally caught crab and Cornish-reared beef, costs around £15-£20 per person.
Treat yourself: Don't leave St Ives without investing in a Cornish pasty from the Pengenna shop at 9 High Street. Better still, buy a reserve for the walk back to Zennor.
How long? Allow five to six hours, or longer, if you want to linger in St Ives.
Difficulty: 3/3
Duration: 11 miles
How to get there: St Ives is the nearest station (linking with London services via St Erth); there are buses to Zennor (see www.cornwallpublictransport.info). If you're travelling by road, take the A30 and B3306.
