Stunning silk curtains to make
Afford the luxury of silk by making curtain panels yourself – they're really quick and easy
To make:
Measure the length of curtain panel required, allowing extra for the curtain to ‘puddle' on the floor, for hems, and a deep fold at the top, if required. Look for wide width silk dupion - we used 140cm of wide silk dupion (£6.50 per m, Fabric World, 020 8740 0102).
Join two pieces together, if necessary, for a wide panel. Press under and stitch narrow hems at the sides and 6cm deep hems across the top and bottom.
Make a deep fold at the top and clip onto curtain rings. Add scallop-edged net curtains to hide a less than perfect view. We used Alvine Spets polyester nets (145cm x 300cm, £6.99 a pair, Ikea, 020 8208 5600).
Complete the luxury look with feather tiebacks (£35, Laura Ashley, 0871 230 2301).
Instead of lining the panels, use inexpensive ready-made curtains and clip up with the silk panels to give body to the fabric and prevent light showing through. We used Lenda curtains (140cm x 300cm, £22 a pair, Ikea).
