10 tips for healthy houseplants
How to look after your indoor plants
1 A water bottle with a sports cap is ideal for watering small to medium plants. It allows you to water plants where they need it.
2 Read the label, paying attention to the plant's preferred light and heat, and, of course, position.
3 Most plants are killed by over-watering. Plants do better if they're a bit neglected.
4 Plants go into a state of hibernation in the winter when they'll need less water, feed and heat.
5 Freezing water straight from the tap can shock plants. Add a drop of water from the kettle to make it a more comfortable temperature.
6 Give glossy plants an occasional wipe with a cloth. In summer, you can stand them outside and give them a light sprinkling with the hose. In winter, pop them under a gentle showerhead.
7 Plants that enjoy high humidity levels benefit from regular misting with a spray mister.
8 Pinching out the tips of some leafier houseplants results in bushier plants.
9 Avoid extremes of warm or cold, keeping the temperature even and comfortable.
10 Treat any problems quickly before the symptoms have a chance to take hold.
