What to plant and sow in January
What to get into the garden in January. By Ann-Marie Powell
■Sorbus hupehensis Pink Pagoda: A pretty, small tree with grey-green leaves developing into brilliant autumnal shades. Clusters of spring flower give rise to pink autumn berries, which fade to white.
■ Lilium regale: Beautiful statuesque lilies with white trumpet blooms with maroon backs and a canary yellow throat. Plant bulbs on their side now to help ensure a good display.
■ Amelanchier lamarckii: The snowy mespilus has everything you could want in a large shrub. Hundreds of starry white flowers in spring are followed by inky purple-black berries in summer before the foliage turns orange-red in autumn.
