How to... grow your own garlic
You won't believe how simple it is to grow in a border, pot or window box.
November is the time to plant out that kitchen essential, garlic - you won't believe how simple it is! It's easy to grow in a border, pot or window box. Sowing garlic in the autumn will produce a tasty, home-grown crop for you to harvest next July and August.
You can plant shop-bought garlic, although garden centres and nurseries sell bulbs, too.
Choose a sunny position and dig over the ground, incorporating plenty of compost or manure, or fill a pot with compost.
Next, break off individual cloves from the bulb and push each one into the soil or compost, with the pointed end facing upwards. The tip should be just below the soil's surface.
Water well and watch them grow!
