Knitted cakes: Battenburg cake

Materials
● 4-ply yarn in pale pink, pale yellow, beige and white
● pair of 23/4mm/no12 needles
● foam block, 7cm square, 2.5cm thick
Abbreviations
alt: alternate; C6B: cable 6 back. slip next sts to cable needle and hold at back, K3, K3 from cable needle; C6F: cable 6 front, as C6B but hold cable needle in front; dec: decrease; foll: following; g-st: garter stitch (every row knit); inc: increase; K: knit; P: purl; patt: pattern; rem: remaining; rep: repeat; RS: right side; st(s): stitch(es); st-st: stocking stitch; WS: wrong side
Main part
(Make 2.) Using pink, cast on 10 sts, using yellow, cast on 10 sts.
1st row: (RS) K10 yellow, twist yarns, K10 pink. Cont in g-st for 16 rows, working in the correct colour and twisting yarns between colours.
Next row: (WS) P in correct colour.
Next row: (RS) K10 pink, K10 yellow. Cont in g-st for 15 rows in correct colour. Cast off.
Side
(Make 1.) Using beige, cast on 66 sts. Work in st-st for 2.5cm. Cast off.
To make up
Join short ends of side piece. Sew one main piece to side piece, fit foam in place, sew 2nd main piece to side piece. Using white yarn, embroider chain stitch between coloured squares, making a cross in centre of cake. Work chain stitch in beige around edge of main and side parts.
