Make a pine cone bird feeder

Give robins a treat this winter with pine cones stuffed with seed

Robin on a pine cone

These are easier to make with two people. You will need mixed bird seed, melted fat from a roast (or dripping from the butcher), thin red ribbon and some large pine cones, as open as possible.

Tightly tie one end of a 25cm length of ribbon around the first few ‘prongs', at the apex of a cone.

While one person holds the cone up by the ribbon, twirling it slowly, the other can flick seed into all the crevices.

Heat the fat and pour it over the cone to stick the seed in place. Hang it up to set (approx ten minutes).

Once the contents have been eaten, repeat the process or just sprinkle seed over the cone every morning.
