Look for bargain packs of wooden coat hangers and paint them in pretty colours. Use leftover paints or, to get small quantities of a variety of colours, buy test pots. These are usually emulsion and will need to be painted or sprayed afterwards with clear polyurethane for a durable finish.

First, paint the hangers all over in one colour. Then, using a fine paintbrush, paint on your design. For best results, keep the design simple - try spots, hearts or flowers. Don't worry if the painting is not quite perfect - small imperfections are part of the joy of a hand-crafted product.
