Paint a birdhouse

Wooden birdhouse

There’s often plenty of food for birds in a garden but nowhere suitable for them to nest, so help birds find a home in your garden by putting up a nesting box.

Choose one with a removable side or base so it can be cleaned out at the end of each season. Use two or more different boxes to attract a variety of birds. Visit www.rspb.org.uk for advice on where to site boxes for the birds you would like to attract. When siting a nest box, make sure birds have a clear flight path to the nest without any clutter directly in front of the entrance.

We used an RSPB nest box from a selection at Homebase (0845 077 8888). It comes with a green roof and we just used some leftover exterior paint on the sides.
