How to stencil a tray

Painted stencil tray

Lightly sand a plain wooden tray. Paint with emulsion paint – we used Farrow & Ball Cornforth White. Apply two or three coats – leave to dry fully between each coat. Using a stencil and stencil brush, carefully paint ‘Drink’ – or a word of your choice – in the centre of the tray. We used Crafter’s Acrylic, mixing a little white with black to achieve a slate colour. When completely dry, use fine sandpaper to rub the edges of the tray to reveal some of the underlying wood. Lightly sand over the stencilled letters, too, to achieve an aged appearance. If your stencil is not flexible and too large to fit inside your tray, cut individual letters from stencil film or card.

Tray, John Lewis. Stencils, stencil brush and Crafter’s Acrylic paint, Hobbycraft. Paint, Farrow & Ball
