Thread a ribbon through a slate heart, pin on a large flower, then write your guest's name in chalk on the heart, and tie on to the back of the chair. Small slate hearts are available from Camilla Snow Interiors, among other suppliers.

Tie a tiny posy of small flowers and small-leaved foliage with a cardboard label to the chair back. Pictured here are wax flowers and Sorbus berries, with sprigs of box and rosemary, but use what's in season or growing in your garden.

Match the colours of your floral design to the table. For this look, tie a large bloom and coloured label together with sheer ribbon, all in the same shade. A dahlia has been used here.

For a bold, modern look with an elegant simplicity, echo the flowers on the table by simply tying a bunch of yellow lilies to the back of the chairs. Trim the stems short, and you might like to remove the pollen-laden stamens to avoid potential staining.

Add understated charm with a bunch of leaves, tied with a name tag. Go for glossy-leaved evergreen shrubs, such as bay or laurel, and secure with narrow green ribbon. Tie the arrangement on to a loop of string on the back of the chair.

An ideal choice for a wedding reception. Wire a cluster of white carnations to a broad white or cream ribbon, loop the ribbon over the chair back and secure with a stitch or double-sided sticky tape.

Wrap wheat stems around a wire heart (buy one or make the shape from florist's wire). Add a loop of raffia at the top to tie to the chair back.
