Transform a basic white lampshade with an oddment of fabric and some pretty beaded trim
● 20cm diameter white lampshade, £5, John Lewis (020 7629 7711)
● 30cm of 112cm-wide silk dupion, £10.95 per metre, Broadwick Silks (020 7734 3320) - this is sufficient for two 20cm lampshades
● 70cm of beaded trim - ours was from a selection in John Lewis furnishing trimmings
● matching thread
● fabric glue such as Uhu
● 1m of narrow velvet ribbon (optional)
To make
To make a paper pattern for the lampshade cover, roll the lampshade around a large sheet of paper, marking the top and bottom of the lampshade with a pencil. Use the lampshade seam as starting and finishing points. Add 1cm on both side seam edges and 2cm at top and bottom. Cut out to make a paper pattern.
Cut out from fabric. Pin and stitch sides together taking 1cm seam allowances. Press seam allowances open. Neaten top and bottom edges of fabric. With edges level, pin and stitch tape of beaded trim to lower edge of fabric stitching as close to beads as possible.
Position fabric cover on lampshade. Fold top and bottom edges over shade and glue in place, snipping turnings around top so they lie flat. Optional, glue narrow ribbon around top and bottom of shade on the right side, overlapping ends at seam.
