Re-cover a chaise longue
Give an old chaise longue a new lease of life by fitting new covers
● Small claw hammer or screwdriver
● Brown paper
● Fabric
● Scissors
● Staple gun
● Fabric glue
● Braid
● Upholstery pins
1 Using a small claw hammer or screwdriver, prise off the staples and tacks that hold the old fabric on the chaise longue. Be careful with the fabric, as you'll need it to make a pattern for your new cover. If there are several pieces, label them, together with the order they fit on.
2 Iron or flatten out the fabric, place it on a large piece of brown paper and draw around it to make a pattern, or use the old cover itself as the pattern. Place this on the new fabric, making sure the design runs in the same direction on adjoining pieces. Cut the pieces out.
3 Join as necessary, then arrange over the padding. Staple neatly in place along the edge of the frame making equal-sized pleats on rounded areas. Keep the grain straight and the fabric evenly taut.
4 Glue the braid over the staples to hide them and to make a decorative edging. Alternatively, fix the fabric with a row of traditional upholstery pins. This looks particularly good with heavier fabrics and furniture.
