A bright way to tidy children's clutter - or your own!
If you are tired of cleaning up after your children and you need a fun way to organize their toys or stationery, try this great project. Make this lively wall tidy from brightly patterned fabrics, with lots of separate pockets for easy storage of all those odds and ends.
● 17 x 71/4in. (42.5 x 18cm) each of three different printed cotton fabrics
● 14 x 20in. (35 x 50cm) each of star print and polka dot heavy cotton fabric
● 42in. (105cm) of blue gingham ribbon
● 51/4 x 20in. (13 x 50cm) piece of plain green fabric
● Iron-on rhinestone transfers
● 2 buttons
1. Turn under the top and bottom edges of one strip of printed cotton by 1/4in. (5mm) and stitch in place. Start pinning the strip onto the star print fabric panel so the left-hand side raw edges are aligned and the bottom edge of the strip is approx. 1in. (2.5cm) from the bottom of the panel. Make a 1/2in. (12mm) vertical tuck in the strip 3⁄4in. (18mm) in from the left-hand edge and pin in place. Make a second 1/2in. (12mm) vertical tuck 5in. (12.5cm) in from the left-hand edge, and a third 43/4in. (12cm) in from right-hand edge.
2. Repeat step 1 with the other two strips, placing each one with the bottom approx. 1in. (2.5cm) above the top of the one below. Machine stitch vertically 1/8in (3mm) to the left of each tuck across the strips only, and then stitch horizontally across the base of each strip to create individual pockets.
3. Cut the gingham ribbon into three lengths and pin one along the bottom edge of each pocket strip to conceal the bottom seam. Zigzag stitch the ribbon in place.
4. Fold the length of green fabric in half and stitch along the length. Turn out to make tube, flatten so the seam runs down the centre and press. Cut in half to make two tabs. Fold the tabs with the seam on the inside and pin onto the main panel with raw edges aligned and the fold facing downward as shown.
5. Place the polka dot fabric right sides together onto the front of the wall tidy and machine stitch around all edges with a 5/8in. (15mm) seam allowance, leaving a gap in the bottom edge for turning. Turn right side out and press. Turn under the edges of the gap and slip stitch closed. Iron pieces of the rhinestone transfer onto the pockets and stitch buttons onto the tabs.
