Transform a dining room chair

dining chair with fabric seat cover

What you'll need

● Old chairs
● Sandpaper
● Eggshell paint
● Paintbrush
● Scissors
● Fabric suitable for upholstery
● Staple gun

Time required: two-and-a-half hours, (plus 36 hours drying time), easy to do.

Before you buy

This is a great way to update your existing chairs or salvage yard finds. Don't worry if you can't get a matching set - painting them in the same colour will coordinate them. Look for attractive shapes but don't worry if they're a bit tatty. A lick of paint and a square of fabric will give them a new look.

Remove the seat and set to one side.

Lightly sand down the chair to remove old varnish or paint.

Apply two coats of primer, leaving two hours to dry between each coat. We used Dulux's quick-drying wood primer and undercoat, £11.99 for 750ml.

Once the primer is dry, paint the chair with eggshell paint and leave to dry for at least 16 hours, then repeat with a second coat. We used Highland Falls 4, £25.99 for 2.5 litres, by Dulux.

Use the existing seat pad as a guide to cut out a piece of fabric large enough to cover the seat, and with approximately 5cm excess on each side to fold over the back.

Stretch the fabric over the front and staple around the edge of the underside of the seat, removing any excess fabric.

Finish by fitting the seat pad into its original place.
