Get your needles out for a good cause: knitting catnip mice for the feline residents of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home
It's a busy time of year for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home: on a typical summer's day staff will be looking after over 200 cats.
The reasons behind that are that summer is the time when kittens are born, and fewer people are available to rehome a cat because of holidays.
To help make the cats' stays at Battersea more enjoyable, the charity is asking knitters to make catnip mice for the cats to play with. If you'd like to help, there's a pattern below, and details of where to send the completed mice.
Battersea Rehomer Ros Davies says: 'Were approaching our busiest time of year and caring for so many cats is always a challenge. Cats that would normally go in days can take months to find a home, but whilst they wait for a new owner, we want to make their stay with us a little more fun and interesting. We know they love playing with their homemade knitted mice.'
Our mouse pattern for stripy mice (right) is knitted in stocking stitch, and using crochet for the tail. You can tuck a catnip pouch inside to make your mouse even more appealing to cats.
