One cushion, four new looks
Personalise a plain cushion in no time at all with simple trims
Add opulent tassels
Simply undo a few stitches at each corner of the cushion and thread the tassel loops through to the inside. Working from the wrong side, stitch the tassels firmly in place, sewing up the gap in the stitching at the same time.
Stitch on pretty lace
Make a slip-on cover from embroidered net curtaining, edged with lace. Cut a piece of net measuring 30cm x 102cm. Attach the lace to one long edge. Fold net in half with right sides together and stitch across bottom and side, taking 1cm seam allowances. Turn right side out, press, and slip over cushion.
Attach a fabric band
Cut a rectangle of fabric measuring 30cm x 102cm. Neaten long edges and press 1.5cm onto wrong side. Stitch velvet ribbon to long edges. With right sides facing, stitch short edges together, taking 1cm seam allowances. Turn right side out, press, and slip over cushion. Fabric from Borovick (020 7437 2180). Sew on pearl buttons
Make use of all those spare shirt buttons and sew them in a decorative pattern. We used 16 mother-of-pearl buttons simply placed 10cm apart. Try combining buttons of different shapes, sizes and/or colours, either spaced out or close together to form a design, such as a heart shape. Buttons, from a selection at John Lewis.
