Make a homemade book bag

Book bags to sew

You can make two bags from 60cm of 140cm-wide fabric. We used fabrics from a selection at Laura Ashley (0871 230 2301).

How to make

Step 1
Cut two rectangles 44cm x 35cm for the bag and two rectangles 55cm x 8cm for the handles. Press under 1cm on long edges of handles. Press in half lengthwise and stitch close to both edges. Pin and stitch the two bag pieces together at sides and bottom, taking 1cm seam allowances

Step 2
Neaten seam allowances together. Press under 1cm then 3cm around top of bag. Slip ends of straps under hem 12cm apart. Stitch hem. Press straps upwards and stitch around top of hem, stitching through straps as well.
