Give homeless dogs a helping hand

Combine your passion for pets with your keen hand for crafts by stitching a scented doggie bag for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

Currently caring for more than 500 of London’s stray hounds, the initiative is part of the kennel’s enrichment plan to better the wellbeing of the animals while they wait to be adopted. The scented bags de-stress the dogs by providing them with a variety of new tastes, smells and sounds to enhance their environment.

Featuring a Staffordshire bull terrier motif, the bags have been designed exclusively by crafter and author Helen Philipps. Quick and easy to make, Philipps says the bags are suitable for all stages of sewers, so beginners needn’t be discouraged.

"Even if you’ve never tried sewing before, this is a great project to start on," says Philipps. "It’s also a fun way to help a good cause – it won’t cost you much but will make a big difference to Battersea dogs."

Battersea’s Canine Welfare Trainer, Claire Matthews adds: “They will also look really nice hanging in the dogs’ kennels and hopefully make the dogs stand out to potential new owners looking around!”

Send your doggie bags to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, 4 Battersea Park Road, London SW8 4AA. Find out more about Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and to download the pattern, visit the website.
