Use postmarks to liven up crockery

Wondering how to display all your favourite postcards? Coast has six clever ideas - styled by Tanya Goodwin and photographed by Rachel Whiting - and here\'s the first…

We scanned interesting franking marks from favourite old postcards, then printed them on to Lazertran, a transfer paper. The paper was soaked in water and the image slid on to white ceramic pieces.

Lazertran, £10 for eight sheets, Lazertran. Ceramic dishes, from £4 each, Woolworths

Turn postcards into sticky labels

We scanned a selection of postcards, printed them on sticky-backed paper and passed them off as travel labels by sticking them on a wooden cube. A perfect way to remember seaside holidays.

Birch storage cube, £170, Store. Vintage Fifties record player, eBay

Decorate a screen with handwritten messages

The copperplate writing on the back of vintage postcards is not only fascinating, it’s decorative, too. We gathered up a selection and fixed them in rows to a shiny screen.

Barcelona chair and footstool, from £759.99, Go Modern. Lacquered screen, £184, Wight Studio

Create a work of art

Some of the postcards we received were little pieces of art themselves. So we had them enlarged and printed onto canvas, then hung them on the wall.

Canvas, £70, www.canvasrus.co.uk. Vintage bobbin, from £12, Baileys. Recycled cardboard vase, £15, Hen & Hammock

Turn a postcard into a ceramic coaster

We sent a digital image of an old postcard to Digitile, who printed it onto a ceramic tile. Just the thing to stand a refreshing jug of lemonade on.

From £25 per tile, Digitile, www.digitile.co.uk

Hang them from the ceiling

This light comes with little movable bulldog clips, which are ideal for displaying a collection of cards. And the best thing is, they can be constantly changed and updated.

Zettelz 5 light, £590, Cameron Peters Lighting. Hudson’s Bay point blanket, £240; Jonathan Adler apple cushion, £46, lemon cushion, £85, and pear cushion, £46, all Selvedge. For a similar vintage phone, try After Noah.
