Food swaps to cut cals

plain scone with jam on it

Which pastry breakfast?

SWAP Croissant with butter, a hot chocolate, 622 calories, 29g fat
FOR Fruit scone with jam, a black coffee, 220 calories, 5.9g fat
WHY? A croissant with butter supplies nearly half of a woman’s desirable intake of saturated fat (the sort that raises blood cholesterol). It could also leave you hungry – according to an Australian study into how full various foods made people feel, croissants were found to be very unsatisfying. A fruit scone (especially a wholemeal one) gives longer-lasting energy. Jam is fat-free and makes a healthier alternative to butter. Swap hot chocolate for black coffee to save 280 calories and 4g of fat.
