Are you tempted to do a detox diet? Problem is, strict detoxes are not only miserable, they also simply don't work because they lack the healthy balance of nutrients your body needs. Most detox plans revolve around a very low-calorie liquid-based diet that promises you'll drop pounds quickly - but chances are, you'll regain all the weight, and more, as soon as you return to your normal eating regime. And you might suffer the side effects of severe calorie restriction - including headaches, constipation, bad breath and constant fatigue.
Our diet plan focuses instead on anti-ageing, body-boosting superfoods, including garlic (known to lower cholesterol and blood pressure) and fresh berries (which strengthen your blood vessels, helping to prevent heart disease). Increasing your superfood intake will also boost your health via energy-delivering nutrients, bloat-reducing fibre, appetite-suppressing proteins and omega-3 weight-loss fats.
And, according to Michael van Straten, author of The Complete Superfoods Cookbook (Mitchell Beazley, £18.99), superfoods help to improve your immune system and contain substantial levels of the essential vitamins and minerals and phytochemicals that can help protect cells from damage and ageing. It has also been suggested that phytochemicals can potentially fight diseases such as cancer.
While most of us are aware that a diet high in processed foods equates with weight gain and health issues, research at Tufts University in the USA has now confirmed that a common junk food ingredient, the artificial sweetener fructose corn syrup, actually appears to alter the way your body metabolises calories, which means that the amount of fat you store after a meal might be dramatically increased.
Another well-documented danger of eating processed foods, that are high in artificial additives, lies in their alarming acidity levels - and this acidity is not only linked to higher occurrences of disease, but also makes your body less able to mobilise oxygen, which has a dramatic and negative impact on your energy levels.
However, the good news is that our Anti-ageing Diet Plan gradually reverses all of these unhealthy side effects that have been associated with eating high-calorie processed foods. This is because the daily meal menus are packed with only beneficial nutrients, are low in salt and sugar - and contain no artificial ingredients.
And you'll soon feel the benefits. In just a few days you'll notice that your energy levels will begin to surge, your health will improve... and you'll start to lose weight slowly but surely - up to 7lb in a fortnight (yes, that's a whole dress size!).
The anti-ageing diet plan rules
According to eco-nutritionist Liz Tucker, the easiest way to detox your diet is to ensure that the majority of your food is bought fresh and unlabelled...
1 "And if it does have a label - for example, on yoghurt, bread or breakfast cereal - it should be made from no more than five ingredients and every one of those should be something you recognise as a conventional foodstuff, such as flour, oats or nuts. If it's a chemical or an E number, put it straight back onto the shelf," says Liz.
2 "Remember that healthy fats encourage weight loss. Lecithin, which is included in the superclean smoothie, contains a healthy fat that's vital for brain and body health. On days when you don't drink the smoothie, take a teaspoon of neat omega oil - try Solgar Omega Advanced Blend 2:1:1, £16.89 (www.solgar.co.uk), instead."
3 Start with the Superclean Day (overleaf) devised by Suzi Grant, author of '48 Hours to a Healthier Life' (Penguin, £6.99). It delivers high levels of nutrients and grade-A superfoods to kick-start your body into ‘refresh' mode. Follow the Superclean Day for one day to get yourself going, then move on to the given selection of breakfasts, lunches and dinners - depending upon your likes, dislikes and budget.
If you decide to follow the diet plan for more than seven days, simply repeat the Superclean Day at the beginning of each week.
