The Martini Diet

Based on the Gallic principles that French women get to tuck in to all sorts of rich foods without gaining weight, the Martini Diet is much more than just a highly entertaining diet with a twist; it is about a happier, saner way to lose weight.

Who's a fan? Victoria Beckham and LA pals Kate Beckinsale and Eva Longoria have been giggling over this diet's tongue-in-cheek approach to eating and exercise.

What's hot about it: Devised by self-help guru Jennifer Sanders, the fun, light-hearted Martini Diet blends indulgence with balanced restraint like the principle that one martini is perfect; two or three makes you do things you regret. Small portions of high-calorie foods, alcohol and ‘elegant' forms of exercise are the foundation of the Martini diet

What you can eat: The philosophy is to "eat wonderful food, take modest portions, and skip the snacking between meals" in order to lose weight and feel luscious. Sanders' belief is that a little bit of everything, no matter what the calorie count, can keep cravings at bay and control weight. Any good food is on the menu; just follow the diet's three principles:

Rule 1: eat only the very best

It's okay to eat virtually anything as long as it is made from real and high-quality ingredients (butter, cream, meat and other fats are encouraged).

Rule 2: eat somewhat less of the very best

This is where the diet part comes in... and it's all about portion control. Each component of a meal must fit into a 3-ounce martini glass.

Rule 3: eat the very best only at mealtimes

No snacking, ever, because it is "not elegant".

Can I indulge? Of course! But follow the rules... when dining out, eat only a third of what you're served and take the rest to go. If you can't restrict yourself to a small portion of a particular food, then avoid it completely.

As for desserts, have a bite and push the rest away.

Try a sample menu

Breakfast: One 1oz slice of cheddar cheese with one large scrambled egg, followed by half a cup of strawberries OR 2oz smoked salmon with half a wholewheat bagel with a strong espresso.

Lunch: One cup of fresh vegetable soup with a sandwich made from the best bread, one slice of cheddar cheese and a fresh, ripe sliced tomato OR a salad of spinach, the finest parmesan, wholegrain croutons and olive oil topped with a small 2oz grilled tuna steak.

Dinner: Grilled fillet of salmon with half a cup of brown rice and half a cup of grilled asparagus OR roast chicken with mashed potatoes and steamed veg - remember, each portion should be no bigger than a martini glass. For dessert, allow yourself two tablespoons of good-quality ice cream.
