Top 10 feelgood sounds of summer
What are the sounds you associate with happy summer days?
Most of us have a sound that reminds us of summer, and so makes us smile.
A new survey, commissioned by Pimm's, reveal that 76% of Brits feel uplifted by their favourite sound of summer.
'This study suggests that sounds are vitally important emotional triggers," said psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman, head of research at the University of Hertfordshire. 'Without thinking about it, we hear a sound and that immediately causes us to recall certain memories and associations. These associations are at their most powerful when linked with other senses or especially positive experiences.'
So what are the top 10 feelgood sounds of summer? Here are the results:
1. Lawnmower cutting grass
2. Pub garden chatter/laughter
3. Waves breaking on a beach
4. Cricket ball hitting a bat
5. People playing tennis
6. Drinks being poured over ice
7. Seagulls cawing
8. Pigeons cooing
9. Clinking glass
10. Rain
Professor Wiseman comments: 'For most people, the sound of a lawnmower evokes happy childhood memories of playing outside during the summer holidays, and is associated with the pleasant smell of cut grass - so it is not surprising that it has topped the league table.'
Guy Barter, Head of Horticultural Advice at the Royal Horticultural Society, says: 'The lawn is essentially part of the country's identity - think cricket, sandwiches on the lawn and afternoon strolls around the park; hearing a lawnmower brings these thoughts to mind.'
Despite the weather Brits remain optimistic, with only one in 10 associating the sound of a downpour with summer.
The research also showed that Brits are happiest during the summer when socialising with family or friends. Almost half of respondents (46 per cent) said their ideal summer's day would consist of a barbecue, while just 11 per cent opted for a visit to the seaside.
Lizzie Penny, spokesperson for Pimm's, said: 'Our research indicates the huge appeal of the British outdoors - whatever the weather - and Brits' sense of optimism.'
