What women doctors want you to know: mindset
We asked 25 experts to share their vital stay-well secrets: your mindset
We’re not saying they’re better than their male colleagues, simply that some female medics may have fascinating nuggets of health advice that could benefit women. We asked 25 experts to share their vital stay-well secrets. Here's what they told us about your mindset...
Chanting can help you nod off
‘Chant a mantra for five to ten minutes before bedtime - you'll soon fall asleep,' says yoga specialist Dr Juhi Gauta.
Depression's not all in your head
‘In fact, depression and anxiety can be early symptoms of physical conditions like anaemia, thyroid problems, or the menopause,' says journalist and GP Dr Ellie Cannon. ‘Before taking antidepressants, talk to your doctor about whether you need a blood test to rule out the possibility of these conditions.'
Worrying makes you apple-shaped
‘We build up fat round the middle so the body can access fat stores quickly in an emergency,' says nutritionist Dr Marilyn Glenville. ‘After a crisis, stress hormones tell the body to refuel fast, but sadly it can't distinguish between a delayed train and a truly life-threatening situation. So constantly feeling stressed not only makes you hungry, it makes you crave high-energy foods full of sugar and fat that are stored as abdominal fat.'
Cope better by tackling the easy things first
‘Last year I saw a lot of patients who contemplated suicide after losing their jobs or seeing their savings vanish,' says psychiatrist Dr Shamila Moodley. ‘I advise people who are feeling swamped by their problems to take control by making a to-do list and doing the simplest things straightaway. If you're in debt, for example, you could start by cutting up your credit card or contacting the Citizens Advice Bureau. Completing these smaller tasks gives you the sense of achievement you need to take charge of your life.'
