On test: Equilibrium stress-busting supplement

Stress Equilibrium is a calming supplement that claims to help you cope with the stresses and strains of everyday life. By Carol Muskoron

What is it? 

It's a one-a-day tablet, or a drink, with Lactium as its active ingredient. Lactium is a bio-protein isolated from milk. It has been extensively studied for over 10 years and this is the first time it's been available in the UK. The tablets come in seven-day or 14-day packs, and it's also available as a hot chocolate drink, ideal for bedtime.

How does it work?

Lactium is clinically proven to aid with relaxation and stress reduction. It was developed after researchers considered the blissful state of a baby after drinking milk. Milk doesn't have the same effects on adults because we lack the enzymes that release a relaxing peptide. Lactium has a similar effect, making those who take it feel more relaxed and improving their sleep function. And impaired sleep, as many of us will be aware, is one of the effects and contributory factors in feeling stressed.

What are the best things about it?

It feels good to think you are doing something about your stress and I liked the fact that there are ingredients which claim to help boost your immune system too. All too often when you're stressed you worry about coming down with something as a result of your anxiety and it feels good to have something working for you and with you to prevent that. What's the worst thing about it?
You're not entirely sure it's working! Although you feel supported just through the act of taking the capsule in the first place.

Anything else?

I tried this during a particularly stressful week and I did feel a prevailing sense of calm in my everyday life. I would take these again during times of high stress. It felt good to be doing something for myself when I don't think I was firing on all cylinders.
