A hand-held ergonomic massager reviewed by James Garner

HoMedics Quad Massager

What is it?

The press release says: 'The cute and quirky HoMedics Quad Massager is a brilliant stress-busting, portable gadget that is great for on-the-go massage for those who need some solace. With its comfort handgrip and illuminated quad massaging ‘knuckles', the Homedics Quad Massager is fantastically fun and will help you forget about your worries. The massage heads silently vibrate delivering zen-like calm. Keep yours in your handbag, gym bag or desk draw so it's on hand whenever you need to chill out.'

How does it work?

It's a battery-operated hand-held massager. It has one on/off button and no other settings. To use, simply switch it on and hold the 'massaging knuckles' against your problem areas. It takes three AAA batteries.

What are the best things about it?

Very ergonomic, easy to grip. The four 'knuckles' seem to knead into all the sore spots... even finding some that I didn't know I had!

The sensation was pleasant, not too strong, and not too weak (unlike other battery powered massage devices I've tested).  It certainly helps to elimate some of the daily tension which accumulates from working in a busy digital media office!

What's the worst thing about it?

The noise... quite a loud buzz, which definitely attracted a few turned heads and amused smiles from colleagues in the office.

It's also a little garish, the shiny coloured, white and silver design certainly stands out. I thought the lights on the knuckles were a little unnecessary and would run down battery power.

Anything else?

Having been using this on and off for a couple of weeks, the battery life is holding out well, and as it's compact, it fits snugly into my desk drawer, so you could carry it in a normal bag.

How much does it cost?

The HoMedics Quad Massager comes in pink, blue or green and costs £9.99 (including batteries) from Amazon, Debenhams, House of Fraser, John Lewis and Selfridges.
